About the USA
The United States of America (USA) is a federal republic located on the North American continent, between Canada and Mexico. It consists of fifty states and one federal district and is governed by a federal constitutional structure. With a population exceeding 331 million, it is the world's third most populous country. Its capital and federal district is Washington, D.C. Its most populous city is New York City.
Why the USA?

It is also the country with the world's largest international student population; more than 1,000,000 students choose the USA to expand their life experiences and receive university education. International students make up approximately 5% of all students enrolled in higher education, and this number is steadily increasing. International student enrollment in the USA has increased significantly since the mid-1950s, when it reached only 35,000, demonstrating how far international education in the USA has come.
Grading System in the USA
Most colleges and universities in the USA use a grading system that is rated with letter grades.
- A=90-100 = 4.00
- B=80-89 = 3.00
- C=70-79 = 2.00
- D=60-69 = 1.00
- F=0-59 = 0
Additionally, some schools may also use a +/- grading system.
For example; A+ (97–100), A (93–96), A- (90–92), B+ (87–89), B (83–86), B- (80–82), C+ (77–79), C (73–76), C- (70–72), D+ (67–69), D (65–66), D- (below 65).
A student who receives an F grade in any course is required to retake that course. However, if the course in which an F was received is an elective, it does not have to be repeated. To continue their studies, an undergraduate student must have a minimum overall GPA of C, which is at least 2.0 out of 4. Graduate and doctoral students must have at least a B, or 3.0 out of 4. A student who cannot maintain this grading status is usually given one more semester as a final chance. If the student remains below this level, they are dismissed from the school. Additionally, it is not possible for a student who fails to achieve the required GPA to transfer.
In American universities, in addition to mandatory courses, students can specialize and receive education according to their own interests thanks to elective course options offered. Another advantage the educational system offers to graduate students is the ability to conduct research and teach simultaneously while studying. Thus, students can find the opportunity to contribute financially to their own education.
Most American universities primarily use the semester system. Each semester averages between 13 - 15 weeks. This covers the academic calendar between September – December and January – April.
Required Exams
Students who wish to study at a college or university in the USA are required to successfully pass one or more of the following exams during the application process. The important point here is that scores in the application criteria of colleges and universities may vary. Therefore, the admission requirements of the targeted institution should be carefully examined.
- SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test):
SAT is one of the most commonly required standard exams for undergraduate education in America. This exam measures students' mathematical and reading-writing skills. - ACT (American College Testing):
ACT is another standard exam like the SAT and is used to evaluate students' academic abilities. ACT consists of mathematics, English, reading, and science sections. - TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):
TOEFL is an exam used to measure the English language skills of foreign students. Many universities and colleges in America evaluate the TOEFL scores of international students. - IELTS (International English Language Testing System):
IELTS is an exam used to measure the English language skills of international students, like the TOEFL. Many American universities and colleges accept IELTS scores.
